Five-Year Transportation Agreement with GEL Group Strengthens Maritime Logistics Business Prospects

ICN News, JAKARTA — PT Mitrabahtera Segara Sejati Tbk (MBSS), a marine transportation and bulk material handling services company, is strengthening its business prospects through a coal transportation cooperation agreement with PT Global Energi Lestari (GEL Group). The cooperation, announced on October 26, 2026, provides a foundation for MBSS to increase its operational capacity and prepare for fleet expansion in 2027.

According to reports by several business media outlets, the agreement is estimated to be worth IDR 6 trillion over five years, with a target of transporting up to 30 million metric tonnes of coal. The targeted transportation volume is approximately 500,000 metric tonnes per month, or six million tonnes annually.

The potential business value creates opportunities for MBSS to strengthen its position in the coal logistics sector, particularly in supporting domestic distribution and export requirements. However, actual revenue will depend on the implementation of transportation services and the volume ultimately handled.

ANNUAL TRANSPORTATION TARGET OF SIX MILLION TONNES

The cooperation with GEL Group provides a basis for long-term transportation volume planning. With an annual target of six million tonnes, MBSS needs to ensure fleet availability, operational readiness, and the smooth delivery of coal from loading areas to its final destinations.

Several loading areas mentioned in media reports include Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra. Shipments are expected to serve both domestic and export markets, with destinations determined according to GEL Group’s operational requirements.

From a business perspective, a sustainable transportation volume can help the company plan vessel requirements and optimise asset utilisation. Nevertheless, the target does not mean that the entire volume has already been transported or that the corresponding revenue has been received when the agreement is signed.

FLEET EXPANSION SET AS A 2027 AGENDA

MBSS is targeting significant fleet expansion in 2027. Additional capacity is planned to be introduced gradually to support GEL Group’s coal transportation requirements while improving the utilisation of the company’s fleet.

MBSS President Director Sugeng Pangraksa stated that the long-term cooperation provides a strong volume base for the company to enter its next phase of expansion. Management has also emphasised the importance of punctuality, safety, and efficiency in transportation operations.

To support its operations, MBSS provides coal transportation services using tugboats and barges, as well as larger vessels depending on route requirements. Its operations can also be supported by transshipment facilities using floating cranes, which transfer coal from barges to larger vessels offshore.

The integration of these services is an important factor in handling large coal volumes. Efficient cargo transfers, vessel scheduling, and coordination between loading points and delivery destinations will influence overall operational performance.

FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT AND BUSINESS REALISATION

In its information disclosure published on October 26, 2026, MBSS explained that its cooperation with GEL is structured as a framework agreement. Specific arrangements concerning delivery destinations, vessels, schedules, freight charges, and other technical aspects will be further stipulated through Sea Transportation Agreements (Surat Perjanjian Angkutan Laut or SPAL) for individual shipments.

Therefore, the IDR 6 trillion figure reported by the media should be understood as an estimated business value over the cooperation period, rather than revenue that will automatically be fully recognised. Actual realisation will depend on the execution of transportation services and the applicable commercial terms.

MBSS has been operating since 1994 and has been listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange since 2011. Its experience in marine transportation and bulk material handling provides a foundation for serving customers in the energy and mining sectors.

Meanwhile, GEL Group is a coal trading company serving domestic and export markets. The partnership between the two companies is expected to support efficient coal distribution and create opportunities to develop maritime logistics capacity over the coming years.

For MBSS, the next challenge is to ensure that fleet readiness and operational efficiency remain aligned with its transportation targets. If implementation proceeds as planned, the cooperation could become one of the drivers of the company’s business growth in 2027 and beyond.
