ICN News – Along with the development of the mining, construction, and national logistics sectors, supported by macroeconomic stability throughout 2024–2025, the heavy truck industry in Indonesia is predicted to remain resilient during 2026 and continue to have promising prospects, despite the current global economic uncertainty.
Heavy trucks play an important role in operating on challenging terrain in the mining sector and in distributing logistics goods throughout Indonesia. Whether heavy trucks for the mining sector, construction projects, or mixer trucks used in concrete casting, all face operational challenges that are far from easy.
PT Gaya Makmur Mobil (GM Mobil) is a leading distributor of FAW Trucks in Indonesia for the medium to heavy-duty truck segment. GM Mobil holds distribution rights from FAW Group to market and distribute FAW Trucks products throughout Indonesia. FAW was the first automotive manufacturer established in China in 1953, and until today remains the largest and number one automotive company in China.
GM Mobil began marketing FAW Trucks in Indonesia in 2005, serving the mining, construction, logistics, forestry, and plantation sectors. In addition to unit sales, GM Mobil also provides after-sales services, spare parts sales, and technical & driving training through its network across major cities throughout Indonesia.
The company’s business development and future targets were revealed by Frankie S. Makaminang, President Director of PT Gaya Makmur Mobil, during his conversation with ICN News in mid-May 2026. The following are excerpts from the interview.
Could you please explain the brief history of the establishment of PT Gaya Makmur Mobil (GM Mobil) in Indonesia?
“Our company, PT Gaya Makmur Mobil (GM Mobil), was established in 2005 as a distributor of FAW Trucks in Indonesia for the medium to heavy-duty truck segment. This means that in 2026, we have already spent 21 years fulfilling the needs of the Indonesian market for reliable and efficient FAW trucks.
GM Mobil was established as part of an effort to bring world-class commercial trans-portation solutions to the Indonesian market. Our company is the official representation of the global distribution network of FAW Group, one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in China, which has existed since 1953. FAW was the first automotive manufacturer in China and remains the largest and number one automotive company in the country today.
Since beginning operations in Indonesia, we have built a strong business foundation through distribution networks, after-sales services, and strategic partnerships with various industrial and mining companies across Indonesia”.
Is GM Mobil also a truck manufacturer, or does it focus solely on distributing medium to heavy-duty FAW Trucks in Indonesia?
“GM Mobil acts as the distributor of FAW Trucks in Indonesia for the medium to heavy-duty truck segment. We are not a manufacturer, but since 2005 we have held distribution rights from FAW Group China to market, distribute, and provide after-sales services for FAW Trucks products throughout Indonesia. With this status, we are fully responsible for the supply chain, unit availability, and customer satisfaction from end to end”.

What was the main consideration of GM Mobil’s holding company in China in choosing Indonesia as one of the potential markets for FAW Trucks products?
“It all started when the Founder of GM Mobil searched for and selected the best truck company in China. After reviewing, researching, and comparing various truck brands in China, FAW Trucks was chosen because it was the first automotive industry in China and had proven to have tough and reliable truck products, while also being supported by the Chinese Government as one of China’s state-owned enterprises.
Since 2005, GM Mobil has started a partnership with FAW Trucks and officially began marketing FAW Trucks in Indonesia. GM Mobil saw Indonesia as having great potential for the medium to heavy-duty truck segment because of its vast mining and plantation areas, in addition to economic growth that continues to drive the logistics and construction sectors”.
