ICN News – Legendary Indian Brand Strengthens Its OTR and Mining Tyre Portfolio

Competition in Indonesia’s mining tyre market is becoming increasingly dynamic, with global manufacturers offering specialized products designed to withstand demanding operating conditions. One of the players now strengthening its position in this segment is Birla Tyres, an Indian tyre manufacturer with more than three decades of industry experience.

Established in 1991, Birla Tyres has built a strong presence in India’s tyre industry over the past 30 years. The company is now entering a new phase, with a stronger focus on Off Highway Tyres (OHT) and Off The Road (OTR) tyres, including both bias and radial products, as it seeks to expand its presence in global markets.

This strategy is reflected in Birla Tyres’ participation in Mining Indonesia 2026, held at Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo), Jakarta, from September 9–12, 2026, at Stall No. 2222. The event provides Birla Tyres with an opportunity to introduce its tyre solutions specifically developed for mining and other heavy duty applications.

Focusing on Demanding Mining Conditions

Mining operations present very different challenges compared with conventional road transportation. Tyres must be able to withstand sharp rocks, uneven surfaces, heavy loads, high torque and long operating cycles. To address these requirements, Birla Tyres offers an Off The Road portfolio covering construction, industrial and mining applications. The company places strong emphasis on durability, traction and extended mileage as key elements of its OTR solutions.

One of the products attracting attention is Kalapatthar, developed as a premium tyre for demanding mining conditions. Kalapatthar features a tread compound designed to improve cut and chip resistance, supported by a strong carcass construction for mining applications. Its radial “Z block” tread pattern is designed to support performance in mining environments, including haulage and mining applications for tipper trucks.

Birla also offers Kalapatthar+, developed for heavy mining conditions, along with other OTR products such as Ultra Trac DX, Ultra Trac, Ultra Slick, Grader Max and F Trac. This portfolio demonstrates that Birla is not targeting only one type of vehicle or application, but is developing solutions for a broad range of off road requirements.

From Ultra Trac to Ultra Slick

For earthmover applications, Birla offers Ultra Trac, while Ultra Slick is designed for underground mining applications. These products are important because surface mining and underground mining have different operational characteristics. Tread patterns, construction, compounds and tyre sizes need to be matched with the type of equipment and the specific operating environment.

For mining companies, tyre selection is not simply a matter of purchase price. Durability, productivity, downtime, safety and overall operating costs are becoming increasingly important considerations. As a result, a tyre manufacturer’s ability to understand specific applications is becoming an increasingly important competitive advantage.

Strengthening R&D and Material Research

One of the key areas Birla Tyres continues to develop is research and development. The company traces its technological journey back to its manufacturing facility in Balasore, established in 1991. Birla has also developed radial tyre technology and a range of specialized products, including Kalapatthar, which the company positions as one of its key products for mining and industrial applications.

Today, Birla Tyres is also placing greater emphasis on material research, advanced design and simulation. The company highlights areas including nano carbon composite, resin synthesis, polymer grafting and compound development using materials that support sustainability.

Birla Tyres’ manufacturing facility in Balasore, Odisha, also plays an important role in the company’s strategy. The company states that the facility is equipped with modern technology and machinery, supported by quality control, testing, inspection and traceability processes throughout manufacturing.

Indonesia: An Attractive Mining Market

For Birla Tyres, Indonesia offers significant potential as one of the countries with major mining activities, particularly in coal, nickel and other minerals. The continued demand for heavy equipment and the growing focus among mining companies on operational efficiency are creating opportunities for OTR tyre manufacturers.

Birla Tyres’ participation in Mining Indonesia 2026 demonstrates that the company sees Indonesia as part of a broader international expansion opportunity. Amid competition among tyre manufacturers from different countries, success in the Indonesian market will not be determined solely by brand recognition or price. The ability to provide tyres suited to local mining conditions, supported by technical assistance, product quality and consistent performance, will be increasingly important.

With its experience dating back to 1991, R&D capabilities, manufacturing facilities in India and an expanding OTR portfolio, Birla Tyres is now seeking to build a new chapter for its business with a stronger focus on the global Off Highway and Off The Road markets.

Its participation in Mining Indonesia 2026 represents another step toward getting closer to Indonesia’s mining industry a market that requires tyres not merely to move, but to keep working reliably under some of the most challenging operating conditions.
