Establishes New Subsidiary, Enters Vehicle Rental and Used-Car Trading Businesses
ICN News, Jakarta — PT Indika Energy Tbk (INDY) is expanding its business portfolio once again. The company, which has long been recognized for its strong presence in the energy and mining sectors, is now strengthening its mobility business through the establishment of a new subsidiary, PT Kalista Mobilitas Indonesia (KMI).
KMI was officially established on September 8, 2026, by two indirect subsidiaries of Indika Energy, namely PT Kalista Rotom Orbita (KRO) and PT Kalista Nusa Armada (KNA). The new company is headquartered in Jakarta and has an issued and fully paid-up capital of IDR 60 billion.
Under the ownership structure, KRO holds 99% of KMI, equivalent to IDR 59.4 billion, while KNA owns the remaining 1%, or IDR 600 million. KMI’s financial statements will subsequently be consolidated into Indika Energy’s financial statements.
From Vehicle Rental to Used-Car Trading
What makes Indika Energy’s latest move particularly interesting is the broad scope of KMI’s business activities.
KMI will engage in motor vehicle rental and leasing, vehicle rental transportation services, car repair and maintenance, retail trading of used cars, advertising, and carbon unit trading.
This means Indika Energy is not only developing its electric vehicle business, but is also building a broader mobility ecosystem covering vehicle utilization, after-sales services, and vehicle trading.
The move indicates that mobility is becoming an increasingly important component of Indika Energy’s diversification strategy.
Not a Sudden Move
Indika Energy’s entry into vehicle rental and vehicle trading is not a sudden decision.
The group has already been developing its mobility business through Kalista. PT Kalista Nusa Armada has previously been developed as part of Indika’s electric mobility business, including the rental of electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers and commercial vehicles.
Indika has also developed entities engaged in electric car and motorcycle rental services, particularly for the business-to-business (B2B) market.
The mobility ecosystem has continued to expand, with Indika positioning electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and batteries as part of its broader green business development.
Therefore, the establishment of KMI can be viewed as a strategic move to strengthen and expand the mobility ecosystem that Indika Energy has been building over the past several years.
Diversification Beyond Coal
For Indika Energy, the development of its mobility business has a broader strategic significance.
The company has been diversifying its portfolio beyond conventional energy businesses while developing new businesses in areas such as electric vehicles, batteries, charging infrastructure and sustainable mobility.
By moving further into vehicle rental and used-car trading, Indika has the potential to establish a more integrated mobility value chain.
Vehicles can be utilized through rental and fleet management services, maintained through repair and after-sales services, and eventually re-enter the market through used-vehicle sales.
Such an ecosystem could allow Indika to generate revenue from different stages of the vehicle lifecycle.
This makes the strategy more significant than simply entering the “car rental” business. It represents an effort to build an integrated platform connecting vehicles, rental services, fleet management, maintenance, resale and sustainable mobility.
Targeting a Broader Mobility Market
The inclusion of used-car trading in KMI’s business activities is also worth watching.
The used-car market has different characteristics from the new-vehicle market and provides opportunities to reach a broader range of customers. Meanwhile, rental services can provide a recurring-use business model.
If developed in an integrated manner, the two businesses could potentially complement each other.
Vehicles operated within the rental business, for example, could eventually be managed through the used-car market when they reach the end of their rental cycle.
This is where the mobility ecosystem becomes important. Indika is not merely entering the vehicle rental business, but is beginning to build a business platform connecting vehicle rental, maintenance, fleet management and used-vehicle trading.
Strengthening Its Non-Coal Portfolio
The establishment of KMI also provides another indication of the direction of Indika Energy’s transformation.
The company now has an increasingly diversified portfolio spanning mining, energy, minerals, green businesses and mobility.
The expansion into the vehicle sector could therefore become part of the company’s long-term strategy to increase the contribution of non-coal businesses to its overall portfolio.
Indika Energy has also positioned the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem as part of its broader sustainability agenda and its commitment toward Net Zero 2050.
For the industry, this development is significant because it demonstrates how major Indonesian energy and mining companies are increasingly viewing mobility not simply as a transportation business, but as a strategic growth sector connected to energy, technology, electric vehicles and the circular economy.
The establishment of PT Kalista Mobilitas Indonesia, backed by IDR 60 billion in capital, signals that Indika Energy intends to strengthen its position in this sector.
Indika Energy is no longer focused solely on energy and mining. Through Kalista, the company is expanding into a broader mobility business encompassing electric vehicles, rental services and used-car trading — adding another important pillar to its long-term diversification strategy.
