ICN News – As Indonesia’s mining, plantation, forestry, and construction sectors continue to grow, supported by macroeconomic stability throughout 2024–2025, the national heavy equipment industry is expected to remain resilient in 2026 and continue expanding despite the current global economic uncertainties.
According to HINABI (The Indonesian Heavy Equipment Industry Association), the mining sector remains the primary contributor to domestic heavy equipment demand. Despite fluctuations in the prices of several mining commodities, production activities particularly in coal and nickel mining continue to operate, driving sustained demand for heavy equipment. These conditions have encouraged optimism among heavy equipment business players in Indonesia for 2026 and the years ahead.
PT Gaya Makmur Tractors (GM Tractors) is one of Indonesia’s leading heavy equipment distributors and serves as the sole distributor for several heavy equipment brands from China, Germany, Italy, and Finland. Since the company was established in August 2005, GM Tractors has successfully marketed various types of heavy equipment, particularly Chinese brands. The company aims to become one of the top three major players in Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry.

The company’s business development and targets were explained by Edward Cahyadi, Sales and Marketing Director of PT Gaya Makmur Tractors, during an interview with ICN News in mid June 2026. The following are excepts from the interview.

What were the main considerations of GM Tractors’ holding companies in China and Germany when choosing Indonesia as one of the markets for their heavy equipment products?
Indonesia is considered one of the largest potential markets for heavy equipment products in Southeast Asia. This is supported by the country’s abundant natural resources in mining, plantations, and forestry, as well as the continuous growth of the construction sector.
Particularly in mining, Indonesia’s market remains vast and continues to expand, especially in coal and nickel mining. Indonesia is one of the world’s leading producers of coal and nickel and plays a crucial role in supplying global markets.
Domestic infrastructure projects and nickel based industries, including smelters, EV batteries, and stainless steel manufacturing, are expected to continue growing. Furthermore, domestic demand for coal used in power generation is expected to remain high. These two factors are expected to continuously drive demand for heavy equipment in the mining sector.
To what extent does GM Tractors contribute to the development of Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry? Is it merely a distributor, or does it have other contributions?
GM Tractors is not merely a distributor of several leading heavy equipment brands. The company also plays an active role in developing Indonesia’s heavy equipment industry by continuously expanding its service network throughout the country. Currently, GM Tractors operates 40 service networks across Indonesia, consisting of branches, service points, and site support facilities.
In addition to network expansion, GM Tractors actively conducts training programs for sales personnel and mechanics. The company collaborates with polytechnics, universities, vocational schools, and various training institutions to improve human resources development.
